Father Christmas

Santa Clause was born in America, descended from St. Nicholas, a 4th—century archbishop in Asia Minor. Adopted by the Dutch, St. Nicholas visited homes on
December 5, the eve of his feast day,
punishing bad children and leaving gifts in the shoes of good children. When 17th century Dutch emigrants took their traditions to New
Amsterdam, Sinterklaas the Dutch saint, mixed with customs from other lands, and Santa Claus was born. His image was not fixed until 1822 in Clement Moore’s poem The Night Before Christmas. Fusing
traditional tales with original
Ideas, Moore introduced now
famous traits like the reindeer and the sleigh. Forty years later, political cartoonist Thomas Nast illustrated this St. Nick, creating the classic
Santa in a red fur—trimmed suit.
